Wrinkled Eggs Left Woman Baffled – Are They Safe to Eat?

2 min

Eggs are a staple food in many countries. Not only are they perfect for breakfast, but they're also good for lunch and dinner. They're also one of the most used ingredients in many recipes known to men. But what would you do if the eggs you bought recently were somewhat unusual?

A customer at the grocery store this week was alarmed to see that the eggs she had purchased were "wrinkled," leading her to wonder if they were still edible. She wrote in the post's caption, "I got these eggs at Woolworths," in reference to the Australian supermarket chain.

"Can someone explain to me what the heck is going on with these? I am baffled!" the clueless customer added. Photos showed three wrinkled eggs from a carton containing 12.

The woman said the eggs had a hard shell but were like "hollow rocks." So, she decided to open one and see if the inside was weird, too.

"They seem completely normal on the inside," she noted.

Will You Eat It?

A large number of people were baffled by the wrinkled eggs too, and some even attempted to propose an explanation for them. While some believe they're unsafe to eat, others think it's safe for consumption.

One commenter noted that it's common for hens to lay eggs with unusual shapes. Another noted that the wrinkled shell shouldn't affect the quality of the eggs unless they're soft or cracked.

There were also some who confirmed that the odd eggs were the result of a poorly fed hen.

"Eggs are shaped like that when the hens laying them are lacking in minerals," one man said. "But everything should be all right with the eggs."

Many are now questioning if the wrinkled eggs are safe to eat.

What Causes It?

Additionally, Tim Daniels, the creator of a website dedicated to poultry, has recently posted an article discussing possible explanations. "Some diseases, such as the viral disease infectious bronchitis, can also affect the bird’s ability to produce thick albumen (egg white)," he added. "This can cause wrinkled egg shells because hens will be carriers of the disease for life."
